As the discussion and debate around Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues and while it evolves around us, it’s shaping our future. It’s a topic which divides people, even within Somerset Youth Parliament.
We have already seen a lot of consideration about the risks, costs and opportunities of this technology. But with conflicting ideas, it’s often hard to find a middle ground when we all believe we’re ‘right’! It may be closer to the truth to acknowledge we’re all right to some extent.
So, perhaps rather than getting stuck in the argument about whether we should have AI or not, we need to be thinking about regulation, safeguards, monitoring, responsibilities and exploring what recommendations we can provide or even demand.
For AI to be safe to use and fit for purpose, what could and should happen?
Here Noah, gives his perspective:
Whether you love it, hate it or if you’re somewhere in the middle, AI is a hot topic for debate at the moment. We are learning so much more about AI all the time. It can be tricky to keep up with it. The media presents AI as negative but there are positives to it too.
On one hand, AI is a powerful tool that can help us cure diseases, secure private information and do lots of other useful things. It is very efficient. It can help us learn things we don’t quite get. It can be an emotional support tool when times get tricky. You can use AI to experiment, to understand, to learn.
However, there are also negatives to AI. AI can leak data, create inappropriate images of people and take people’s jobs.
People argue that AI is taking humans’ human thinking away from them. While that may be true, people use tools that speed things up anyway.
Just be sure to stay safe and aware!
