The idea of summer holidays always sounds like so much fun, over a month away from school or college!! Although many will have a part time job during this time, there can also be a lot of time on your hands, and boredom can set in. In this article Bea, member of the Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group, makes some suggestions of what you can do to beat boredom this summer.

The summer holidays are a welcome relief from the stress of school and a time for fun and relaxing, but with the absence of routine and things to do the summer holidays can become a time of boredom and perhaps loneliness. So, in this article I have some ideas for fun things to do that aren’t big expensive days out but fun activities that can be done anywhere.

Mini Golf

You can go to a place that offers this OR why not create your own ‘course’ either outside or in your house using regular items from around your house.

Plant naming

Find some chalk and go around roads labelling the names of the plants growing in verges or gardens (this was done on my road recently and it looks beautiful).

Scrapbooking

This is one for people who love a project and it’s not too expensive to find kits either online or in shops

If these ideas don’t appeal to you some good ideas can be going to your local library and finding books to read perhaps joining the summer reading challenge but also remember that sometimes boredom can be a good thing it can provoke creativity and innovation.

So, if you are feeling bored this summer remember these suggestions or maybe learn to be comfortable sitting in boredom.

Other ideas

  • Get a plastic box with a lid and pick fruit- make drinks, yoghurt smoothies, cakes or jam
  • Camp in your back garden
  • Create a friendship collage
  • Visit an open air cinema in the cooler evening
  • Upcycle clothes
  • Decorate your bedroom- clear out your rubbish or upcycle/ donate – or even better have a front garden/ yard sale
  • Create a blog, dance, some poetry, write a song, or a play – set yourself a challenge or do it with your mates
  • Change your look- rock a new hairstyle (always good in the holidays in case you don’t like it)
  • Beachcombing
  • Organise a picnic
  • Go for a walk and take photographs of all the interesting, challenging or inspiring things you see around you- then send them to us! We’d love to see them! And we could share them

Tell us what you have been up to – or what you’re planning!
