Youth Parliament discussed the implications of how British Black History Month is approached in our local schools, bearing in mind that there are mixed feelings from both Black and White students about how teachers often defer to trying to ‘debate’ and discuss the history of the Slave Trade. Young people have raised concerns about how inappropriate this is for many reasons. But in addition, all students can find this hard to relate to and they believe education around Black History Month should be more current, reflective of our modern diverse culture and should be positive and inspiring! Here’s what Emma had to say.

While Black History is often overlooked in the curriculum of secondary schooling in Somerset, I believe that through my work with our school’s Diversity Panel, change is heading in the right direction, as the education system is able to change and reflect the diverse culture that we represent throughout society.

While there is still a very long way to go, it’s encouraging to see students and teachers alike actively striving for positive change. For example, our school library holds book recommendations on ranging topics reflecting diverse lives, experiences and ideas.

I’m so proud that in our school our student Diversity Panel allows all students to be heard especially including issues raised around race in our school. And most importantly we try to raise awareness, encourage respect and EDUCATE ourselves and others around us. Education is the key to reducing discrimination and spreading love.
