Robert Morrish from the Somerset Careers Hub visited our most recent meeting to engage with members about young people’s thoughts and experiences of careers education throughout Somerset schools.

One of the six priorities identified in the current Somerset Children & Young People’s Plan 2024-30 is to ensure that children and young people’s voices are being heard and represented when it comes to education and their futures. Robert wanted to review this by seeking young people’s voices to help his service understand where funding could be used more effectively to ensure that young people are benefiting in the most effective way from their careers education.

He wanted to explore whether taking part in careers education was helpful and to understand what types of activity or learning they would like to see more or less of.

There is a new proposal to increase work experience for students so there was a focus on whether and how students have an understanding of the skills and behaviours required for the modern workplace.

Here’s Roberts report which has been circulated to schools, which includes young people’s recommendations. We think you’ll find it really interesting!

Robert said:

Thank you for allowing me to come and speak to Youth Parliament, I was very impressed by their level of engagement and the discussions we had!  It definitely reaffirmed some things that I had thought would have come up but they also gave some really good suggestions about activity going forward and some things that I would not have considered.

Youth Worries About Employment

In April, Daniel, member of the Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group, wrote an article about young people’s concerns about a lack of career information at a young age and the lack of education in schools about the skills that employers seek is in decline.
