The Climate Crisis is one of if not the biggest issue facing our world today. This Earth Day, Grace, a member of the Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group has some sustainable ideas.

With Earth Day coming up on 22 April, I would love to share some different ways we can take care of our planet. We’ve all heard about climate change and the issues arising with it. However, many of us are unsure about what we can do to help.

One of the biggest changes we can make is to shop with sustainable brands. Sustainable brands aim to reduce their environmental impact, protect their workers and uphold animal welfare. These are a much better options than fast fashion brands such as Shein, which go against a lot of these sustainable ideals.

A lot of people find it difficult to shop sustainably however, as these brands have a higher quality clothing which often costs significantly more.

Another important way to care for our planet is wherever possible – walk, run, cycle or take public transport. By not using your own vehicle, you help to reduce the amount of carbon emissions, which is incredible beneficial to the planet (and you!)

Finally, a smaller change which has a massive positive impact is using a reusable water bottle instead of plastic water bottles. You can ingest some of the microplastics in plastic bottles, which aren’t good for your health. A reusable water bottle is much cheaper than constantly buying plastic water bottles. We are the first generation to fully understand the consequences of a past careless attitude towards our environment, but we’re also the first who can make change with educated, informed decisions of how to do better!
