Supporting the annual Children’s Parliament Day event each Summer is one of the most anticipated events of the year for Somerset Youth Parliament! It’s supported by teachers, invested local organisations and Council representatives…as well as us!
The event is an opportunity for primary school pupils to compete in a presentation and public speaking activity. Pupils present on a project that they’ve been working on in their schools or in their communities. They explain their project rationale, process and proudly share the outcomes of their work.
This year Blake, Ruby, Zeph and Noah introduced themselves to the schools and ran interactive activities that were fun and engaging.
The day is a great opportunity for the pupils to build their confidence, celebrate their achievements and have their voices heard. It’s also a chance for Somerset Youth Parliament to present themselves and promote their work all while offering pupils the opportunity to join the group and add their voice and passion to our projects and campaigns!
Hopefully we’ll be able to welcome some new members soon!
Noah, member of the Somerset Youth Parliament advisory group said “On 16 June, it was Children’s Parliament Day with schools from all over Somerset taking part. Run by the Somerset Centre for Integrated Learning (SCIL), The event gives Year five and six pupils a chance to give a presentation on a subject of their choice. This year’s theme was ‘making a difference’ and a bee theme was evident too.
From inclusivity in sport to red squirrels, and from celebrating diversity to internet safety, each school gave an inspiring talk about the incredible differences they are making in their communities and beyond. Somerset Youth Parliament told the children who we are and what we are about. It was interesting to see how similar their ideas were to ours. I look forward to Children’s Parliament Day 2027!”
And Blake, Somerset Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) said ‘‘It was interesting to hear about the children’s views on various matters.’
