Somerset Youth Parliament debate a lot! – Let’s face it, the group talk a lot – because of course, they have a lot to say!

In some respects, debating is part of everyday life and happens naturally. However, there are ways of creating various debate activities that are safe, inclusive, fun and challenging that help us understand the power of communication, negotiation and influence.

Debating isn’t about who shouts the loudest or uses the fanciest words. It’s about the willingness to listen to and understand opposing views and principles and then being willing to learn, in order to confirm or adjust your own beliefs.

In this article Dan talks about the importance of debating from his perspective.

‘Debating is a great life skill which helps you develop and understand a wide variety of different views. These may be new to you and may change your perception of the matter. This helps you grow socially and intellectually as it helps educate you on any topic.

It also has positive inflections on your mental health. This is due to the fact that you’re arguing and defending something that may be important to you. This can benefit your health positively.

Another reason is how debating and public speaking are connected as in both, you are talking publicly. This can boost your self-esteem and help you overcome a fear of crowds and speaking. It can also teach you the important life skills of being able to confidently defend and present a point or opinion.

Debating doesn’t just impact you but others. It can make others feel included in a certain topic or matter. It can make others feel heard and that someone is listening and valuing your point.

Overall debating is a positive task that will directly impact a group brilliantly.

Thank you for listening!

Dan
