Stress can impact any of us and at any time, whether it’s the lead up to exams, a job interview or if you have issues at home or with friends. Gemma, member of the Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group let’s us know a little about her destressing techniques.
It is important to test destressing techniques and find the ones that work the best for you. In order to relieve stress, I like to take part in sports, usually that would be swimming, but I also enjoy walking and running. I think exercise is a great technique as it releases endorphins and other neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin which have mood-boosting effects and contribute to an overall improved mental wellbeing. I also like to take myself away and distract myself from the cause of stress. In order to do this I like to spend time with my family and friends who provide a great support network and make me feel good.
The best method I have found for when I want to treat myself is self-care, whether that’s having a warm bath or doing some skincare. It can also be a good idea to treat yourself to an item you have had on your wish list for a while.
To appreciate yourself it is important to be selfish and solely focus on you! Do not compare yourself to others whether it’s their lifestyle or personal qualities. You need to remember you are amazing just the way you are, and any goals for self-improvement should be personal to you only, not influenced by others’ opinions or views.
