Last month Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) from across the UK met at London for the UK Youth Parliament Annual Sitting at the House of Commons. We’ve previously reported on the event, but today is the turn of MYP Emma, and what an experience she had.

What a day!

With the early start and information filled day, it went by in a flash.

The House of Commons Sitting is always a fantastic chance to meet with MYPs from many different constituencies, to discuss important topics and to learn more about the Youth parliament programme as a whole!

The day started by catching a train into London, the early start meant we had fantastic views of the countryside and later the city on our train ride in. Once we arrived at the Houses of Parliament, we had a short interlude where me and James took the chance to take photos (viewable on our Instagram!) and catch up with other MYPs (there may have also been a complimentary pastry or two!).

The microphone then squealed to life, and the regions were read out. We were quite near the end of the list so were very eager to enter the chamber once again. Throughout the morning, we heard multiple speeches from many young people and some MPs! Poignantly there were readings focusing on Remembrance Day. The first debate was Housing where the MYPs had to propose solutions to the manifesto quotes. This was a very passionate debate with many highlighting how stable housing is the building blocks to success for young people. Something I strongly agree with, what do you think?

We then moved onto health; while trying to get the attention of Madame Deputy Speaker I got the nod that I was to speak next! Through my speech, I mentioned the importance of youth led services and even managed to use one of my statistics from my recent survey!! It was all over in a flash, once more I had been able to represent somerset in the House of commons. The video is available to view on the website!

The rest of the day was fuelled by debates focusing on a variety of topics such as crime, sustainability and Employment. It was then time to head off back to Paddington station to enjoy the train ride home.

After time for reflection, I realised how important it is to have MYPs representing constituencies because so many young people have so many different understandings and opinions on certain issues that are universal for young people. It also made me very grateful for being able to represent Somerset on a platform such that I can represent young people alongside James.

I would like to take this chance to thank the NYA, the MYPs and the support staff (especially Kate!!) for making the day such a success!
