Luca is one of our three new Somerset Members of Youth Parliament, his campaign will be “Your Opinion Matters”. During his first article, he wanted to give you an account of how he found out that he’d won and what being a Member of Youth Parliament means to him.

On Wednesday 17 December 2025, I was walking home from school thinking about the reveal of who would be the next Somerset Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs), as we had been told that the winners would get notified on that day.

I got home, put my bag down and nervously opened my phone. I checked my emails… and there it was! A congratulation message telling me that I had been elected as an MYP from March 2026 onwards.

Obviously, I was overjoyed to see this. I had very low confidence in myself prior to this, and my school had only managed to get ballots out just in time before voting closed.

However, now I must look past my anecdote and see the role for what it truly is – a chance for me to make an impact locally and potentially even nationally. It will be a significant turning point in my life, as I get to play the role of some sort of political(-ish) figure for the first time ever.

As for my campaign and manifesto, I have already begun thinking about what I can do to achieve the objectives that I have set for myself. I have concepts in mind for a survey I want to create and am I also thinking about people that I can work with to make things I want to happen, happen.

Nevertheless, I am very happy to be stepping into this role within a few months and am looking forward to the challenges and experiences that it can bring.
