Grace, member of the Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group, lets us know about the dangers of negative mental health and shares some great suggestions of how to combat it.

Negative mental health is a massive issue today and is prominent among both adults and young people. Social media has been proved countless times to be a significant factor in provoking this issue, so it’s important we take breaks from time to time to look after ourselves and do something else. Colouring can be a great tool for stress relief, particularly mindfulness colouring, which allows you to reset and relax. Some people also find meditation a great tool in order to ground themselves and calm their mind. Even activities like reading and going outside contribute to improving how we feel. Sometimes work and school can also cause negative mental health, as it contributes massively to stress, so sometimes it’s important to take self-care days in order to help yourself wind down.

Something which has becomes increasingly popular over the last few years is journaling as this allows you to write down how you are feeling and let it leave your mind, in order to let you destress. There are so many helpful tips on and I would suggest that everyone has a look!

There are lots of different ideas, suggestions and help for improving mental health, stress and anxiety to suit different people. So it’s worth trying a few and possibly trying something different. However, if your mental health is becoming unmanageable and you feel you can’t cope, do speak to a trusted adult and don’t suffer alone and in silence.
