Gemma, member of the Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group was lucky enough to go on a school trip to Westminster. In this article she gives us details of her experience.
Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Westminster, the heart of UK Politics, on a school trip. It was an amazing experience, which really brought my A-Level studies to life and gave me a true insight into the workings of Parliament.
Here’s how my day unfolded:
My day began early, with the coach departing at 8:00am, for the four-hour trip to Westminster. Despite the early start, we were encouraged to stay alert and come up with some questions for both our local MP, Tessa Munt, and our tour guide.
Upon arrival, we had a brief walk around Westminster, viewing some of the important government buildings, including The Supreme Court, HM Treasury building, and Downing Street.
Next, we arrived at the UK Parliament Education Centre, where we were welcomed by the staff. After a quick airport-style security check, we received our visitor lanyards, and stored our phones and bags in a secure crate. Then we met Tessa Munt, who kindly made time in her busy schedule for a Q&A session. Her responses were insightful, but I was especially excited for what came next – stepping inside the Houses of Parliament.
Following another quick security check, we finally entered Parliament itself. Our tour guide was very friendly, funny, and full of interesting facts. The most memorable moment was definitely seeing the House of Commons from the viewing platform – it felt surreal to see the political system in action.
At the end of a busy tour, we returned to the Education Centre where we collected our belongings and prepared for the long journey back!
Final thoughts:
Experiencing the fast-paced atmosphere of Parliament was truly something special – not to mention the fun challenge we had trying to spot well-known politicians!
I know our Somerset Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) Ellen, Ellie and James are invited there on Friday 28th February to represent Somerset young people and debate important issues! All MYPs across the UK are invited to this event every year, but I would truly recommend that any young people visit Parliament if they have the opportunity. It is an amazing way to deepen your appreciation for the intricacies of our political system!
