Members of Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group James and Archie were invited to host a Somerset Youth Alliance Network Meeting, to promote the importance of youth voice in practice and share reflection on what key elements of practice are important, as well as what the ‘blocks’ to engagement are and involving young people. It was really interesting and useful to consider what inspires and motivates workers and current their priorities.
It was also a fantastic opportunity for county organisations, services and decision makers to network, gain insight into their work and to build on potential for mutual understanding support and collaboration.
Archie and James led an interactive meeting which was designed to demonstrate that despite people’s differences, experiences, values and perspectives, it’s always possible to find common ground, by hearing and recognising people as individuals, but also realising that our collective differences can be our strength and resilience.
James and Archie also had the chance to appreciate the wider world of work in terms of roles and responsibilities with young people. This experience is invaluable to young people who want to work alongside services, agencies and decision makers and helps them to use their voices more effectively.
The session was fun, informative and will lead to stronger and supportive relationships thanks to the Somerset Youth Alliance Network.
The Advisory Group members have already been invited to several conferences this year to represent young people and their interests as a direct result of this event. It’s going to continue being an exciting year!

Did you know that Somerset Youth Parliament isn’t just it’s elected members? Any young person in Somerset aged 10-25 years can become a member of the Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group.
