We’re very proud of Somerset Youth Parliament, the groups members and the work that they do. So, we were really excited to receive this article from Iona, one of our newest additions to the Somerset Youth Parliament advisory group about her experiences and why you should join.

Have you ever wished you could become part of an inclusive young people’s group that makes a difference in our area?

Even if you haven’t, Somerset Youth Parliament might be for you.

The group is led by 10-25 year-old young people and is based on values such as diversity, democracy and equality.

As a part of UK Youth Parliament, Somerset Youth Parliament has three elected Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) elected every two years, who run campaigns to make ordinary people’s lives better.

I am part of Somerset Youth Parliament’s Advisory Group, which meets regularly to discuss, debate and create. A current project is the Active Bystanders Campaign, where we’re producing material to be sent to schools, in an effort to help foster a culture where harassment and bullying are called out and therefore prevented.

Whether you’re into writing, design or social media, no-one’s left behind. All these skills and more are ones we develop here at Somerset Youth Parliament. In my experience, the group seems to informally use this encouraging motto: “If you can’t yet do something, you can learn how to do it.” From writing monthly pieces for our website, to interviewing teachers, to decorating public buildings, Somerset Youth Parliament is an incredible way to improve your abilities in a multitude of areas, whilst adding to your CV.

So, if you’re aged 10-25, live in or go to school or college in Somerset, and you want to join a friendly community where young people are empowered to create change, don’t hesitate to look into Somerset Youth Parliament. You can make memories here, and you can make friends here. It’s an opportunity no-one should ever regret taking.
