So many members of Somerset Youth Parliament and the advisory group have told us about what it means to be a member of the group. In this article, Gemma lets us know how being a member makes her feel.

In my opinion, these values represent what Somerset Youth Parliament is all about, and they resonate strongly in our monthly meetings, both online or in-person. I feel proud and inspired to be a member of such a supporting group!

At our latest monthly meeting at Donyatt Village Hall, I met some of the new members of our group for the first time. It allowed me to reflect back to when I attended my first Somerset Youth Parliament meeting around this time last year. I recall how apprehensive I felt about putting myself out there to a group of young people I had never met before. However, I felt and continue to feel comfortable sharing my views, opinions, and experiences to the group due to their unwavering respect, empathy, and kindness towards the other members present, but also towards groups in society that we are acknowledging.

Being part of Somerset Youth Parliament has shown me that when young people are guided by respect, empathy and kindness, we can create meaningful conversations and real change. I’m excited to continue this journey and to welcome others who want to make a difference in a space where every voice truly matters.
