One of Somerset Youth Parliament Advisory Group’s members Zeph has recently taken up an additional volunteer role at the Mump Market Garden. One of Zeph’s many hobbies is growing vegetables, so he was inspired to find out more about this business and how he could learn more – not just about vegetable growing, but also about the challenges of running a small environmentally conscious business.
In the summer holidays I went to go and visit The Mump Market Garden in Burrow Bridge. One of the owners, Jack Musgrave, who is in charge of its day to day running showed my family and I around. Jack told me all about growing the business and the barriers he’s met such as theft, flooding etc.
Since I grow vegetables myself, it was interesting to hear all of the problems and benefits of running a market garden. Jack has found ways to be environmentally sustainable, such as by not turning the soil over and killing micro-organisms. He has also found ways to be financially sustainable, by using solar panels to use solar energy to power his water pumps.
Jack has also created ‘Volunteer Thursdays’ to get people outside and active. I am looking forward to my Volunteer Thursday. I would highly recommend taking a visit to find out all about it yourself.
