We all have times when we struggle with things at school, at home, with our friends or family and with our mental health. In this article Bea, member of the Somerset Youth Parliament advisory group, talks to us about safe spaces within schools and how vital they are.
Last month it was National Youth Work Week, and it got me thinking about the importance of safe spaces in schools, I thought I would write something about the effort of people working in schools who provide a safe space for young people who are struggling.
For example, a student who is the victim of bullying may want to ‘escape’ for a bit. If they’re feeling vulnerable physically or emotionally. Other students may be struggling with mental health or feel overwhelmed. And others might be neurodivergent and struggle to stay still/ in their seat for a school day.
Whilst it’s amazing that some schools provide this resource and have people to support them, many schools don’t provide this essential respite. I believe that this is an issue that needs to be addressed as the difference of having this resource can mean much more to students than many teachers will ever know!
Let us know what you think – does your schools have a Safe Space?
