As September starts it’s back to school time, Emma, Member of Somerset Youth Parliament has got you, with top tips for everyone starting Secondary School this year.
- Keep yourself organised and on top of content in lessons – this will help with completing homework on time and balancing extra-curricular work.
- Don’t put too much pressure on yourself at the start of term – It is important to create and maintain a routine which is realistic and repeatable.
- Research different study habits and resources to find out which ones suit you – this is especially important for exam years as it enables you to use your time as effectively as possible.
- Take some time for hobbies and activities away from schoolwork and computers – Relaxing helps you to recover and allows you some wind down time after the week.
- Ask for help if you need it! There are so many people in and around the school system who are able to answer your questions and help you be the best person you can be; These can be online or in person, like your school head of year or tutor!
With many students transitioning into new years and new schools it’s as important as ever that young people extend kindness to those around them who are experiencing new and perhaps unknown times in their life. While school is a place of stress, revision and pressure, it is also a place fuelled by friendship, kindness and respect. I think we can all think of a time where something hasn’t gone our way – or someone has made a comment which hasn’t made you feel good. So, my final top tip is to Be yourself and be kind to others because the kindness of strangers and people that you know very well – friends, teachers, siblings – is what makes the school community a positive one for everyone.
And always remember, school and exams don’t determine who you are as a person).
Thanks
Emma
