18th-24th November this year was UK Parliament Week, where over the course of the week events take place spreading the word about what Parliament is, what it does and how you can get involved. Member of Somerset Youth Parliament Emma Brown was able to take part in a Youth Question Time. Read on to find out more.
Throughout Parliament week many young people around the UK were able to experience and learn about their political systems and the democracy that we hold.
In my constituency I was lucky enough to attend a Youth Question Time with our local MP Tessa Munt and members of the Council. Schools around Wells were able to submit questions to put forward to the panel.
After school, we headed down to our town hall and were welcomed into the main chamber where we started off by taking a group photo of the whole panel and the students. Many refreshments were given out and we all settled down to start the question time.
The first questions were focused on the new inheritance tax and the effect it would have on the farms in somerset. Then other important topics followed, such as assisted dying, private school tax and also the education system in Somerset. I then had a chance to ask my question which was focused on mental health in somerset and what was being done in the constituency. With most of the questions answered we all headed home and enjoyed the rest of Parliament week.
It is so important that young people have these opportunities to further our political knowledge while also interacting with our political representatives.
